Number System Basics

Different number systems use different bases to represent values. The base determines how many unique digits are used in the system. This tool helps you convert between these different systems.

Supported number formats:
  • Binary (Base 2): Uses only 0 and 1. Example: 1010 (decimal 10)
  • Octal (Base 8): Uses digits 0-7. Example: 12 (decimal 10)
  • Decimal (Base 10): Our standard number system using digits 0-9
  • Hexadecimal (Base 16): Uses digits 0-9 and letters A-F. Example: A (decimal 10)
  • Base 36: Uses digits 0-9 and letters A-Z. Useful for creating shorter representations of large numbers
Hexadecimal is commonly used in computing for memory addresses, color codes, and other applications where binary would be too lengthy but decimal would be impractical.
Format prefixes:
  • Binary numbers often start with 0b (e.g., 0b1010)
  • Octal numbers often start with 0 (e.g., 012)
  • Hexadecimal numbers often start with 0x (e.g., 0xA)
